Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at Mindwell Therapy

At this time, Katie McCoy is the only therapist at Mindwell Therapy certified to offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with Journey Clinical. KAP combines ketamine with psychotherapy to provide a unique and effective approach to mental health treatment. Whether you're dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other challenges, KAP can help unlock deeper insights and support long-lasting mental health improvements.

What is Ketamine?

  • Ketamine is a safe, legal, and effective medication used to treat conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It has fast-acting antidepressant effects, with many clients feeling relief within 1-2 hours of treatment. These benefits can last up to two weeks.

  • It works by blocking NMDA receptors and activating AMPA receptors in the brain, which can help form new neural connections, promoting resilience and mood regulation.

  • At Mindwell Therapy, we use sublingual ketamine lozenges that dissolve under your tongue for a gentle and effective experience.

What Can You Expect During a KAP Session?

  • The effects of ketamine last about 45 minutes, and many people describe the experience as relaxing and insightful. You may feel “out of body” or notice shifts in perception, opening up new ways of thinking.

  • After your ketamine experience, we’ll take time to process your thoughts and emotions together, helping you integrate the insights from the session into your ongoing healing journey.

  • The therapeutic benefits of KAP often extend beyond the session, with many clients reporting enhanced mood and mental flexibility for up to two weeks afterward.

How KAP Works at Mindwell Therapy

  1. Initial Consultation with Journey Clinical
Once you express your interest, Katie will initiate the process by connecting you with Journey Clinical. You’ll start with a Zoom consultation with their medical team, where they will review your medical history, provide education on KAP, and assess your eligibility. If approved, they’ll design a personalized treatment plan and prescribe oral ketamine for your first two sessions, delivered directly to your home.

  2. Preparation Sessions
Before your first ketamine session, we’ll meet to set clear intentions and prepare for the experience. These preparation sessions are similar to traditional therapy, establishing a solid foundation for your KAP journey.

  3. KAP Dosing Session
During your dosing session, which lasts about 2 hours, you’ll self-administer the ketamine lozenge in a supportive, comfortable environment—either at my office or from home (if you’re at home, a “chaperone” is required). You’ll relax with calming music and an eye mask while I guide you through the experience.

  4. Integration Therapy
After your ketamine session, we’ll meet to process your thoughts, emotions, and insights. Integration is a key component of KAP, helping you turn the lessons from the experience into meaningful, lasting change in your life.

  5. Ongoing Support with Journey Clinical
Journey Clinical will continue to support you by monitoring your progress through follow-up consultations. They’ll also handle prescription refills, ensuring you have the resources you need, typically checking in at least once per quarter.
